John Adams' On the Transmigrations of Souls
with New York Choral Society

Carnegie Hall

The Young People’s Chorus of New York City returns to Carnegie Hall on Wednesday, April 8, at 8 pm to join the New York Choral Society and its Music Director David Hayes in John Adams’s Pulitzer Prize- and Grammy Award-winning composition On the Transmigration of Souls, with mezzo-soprano Abigail Fischer, baritone Lee Poulis, and The Mannes Orchestra.

On the Transmigration of Souls, an emotional centerpiece of the New York Choral Society’s “For Those We’ve Loved” program, was commissioned by the New York Philharmonic in 2002 to commemorate the first anniversary of the September 11 attacks on the World Trade Center. For Mr. Adams it depicts the transmigration of the souls of those moving from life to death as it does to those left behind.

New York Chorus Festival:
Benefit Concert for Victims of the Japanese Earthquake and Tsunami

Carnegie Hall

On Wednesday, March 11, the fourth anniversary of the earthquake and tsunami that devastated portions of Japan in 2011, the Young People’s Chorus of New York City conducted by Elizabeth Núñez joined with other choruses from New York City and Japan to commemorate the date in a free concert in Stern Auditorium at Carnegie Hall at 8 p.m.

In a program of Japanese and American songs, participating choruses from New York also included the SoHarmoniums Women’s Choir conducted by its Founding Artistic Director Elizabeth Núñez and The Nippon Club Women’s Chorus conducted by Yoko Ojima.  Coming from Sendai and Ishinomaki to sing at Carnegie Hall were Vocal Ensemble Anima conducted by Mikio Hayakawa and from Fukuoka, Gumma, and Tokyo, The Amapola Women’s Chorus conducted by Tetsuo Yamada, with soprano soloist Yoshiko Yamada, who is also the director of the group.

In a very special highlight of the program, the Young People’s Chorus of New York City and the vocal Ensemble Anima came together to sing Hana wa Saku (Flowers Will Bloom), a message from those who lost their lives to those they left behind.  With music by composer Kanno Yoko and lyrics by Iwai Shunji, the song rose to the top of the Japanese charts and generated worldwide compassion for the victims of this catastrophic event.
