YPC’s 7th Annual Satellite Schools Concert
Thursday, May 20 at 11 a.m.

The Young People’s Chorus of New York City™ will shine the spotlight on the children who participate in the YPC Satellite Chorus Program™ in Manhattan, Brooklyn, Bronx, and Queens in a free concert to be held at the 92nd Street Y on Thursday, May 20, at 11 a.m.

The children in the YPC Satellite Chorus Program™ have been practicing throughout the school year for this annual event and will be led by their instructors—YPC conductors Elizabeth Núñez, Amy Kotsonis, Sophia Miller; and Jon Holden, who is also the YPC’s principal pianist.  Young People’s Chorus from New Jersey, YPC’s second affiliate located in Tenafly, New Jersey, will also perform at this year’s concert led by conductor Emma Brondolo.

The Young People’s Chorus of New York City™ created the YPC Satellite Chorus Program™ in 2003 to bring National Standards-based music education to New York City public schools in need of quality music programs. The program serves over 800 children from grades 3-12, and they come from every corner of New York City: from Manhattan, the Bronx, Brooklyn and Queens.

The children in the YPC Satellite Chorus Program™ hail from:

P.S. 1 – Lower East Side, Manhattan
P.S. 75 –Upper West Side, Manhattan
P.S. 130 – Chinatown, Manhattan
P.S. 268 – Crown Heights, Brooklyn
H.S. 515 – Lower East Side, Manhattan
P.S./I.S. 178Q – Jamaica Estates, Queens
P.S. 69 – Clason Point, Bronx
P.S. 198 – Upper East Side, Manhattan

The concert opens with all of the YPC Satellite Chorus Program™ children joining together in singing Aaron Copland’s "Ching-a-Ring Chaw," then each school will sing individually.  Afterwards, composer Jim Papoulis will lead the children in a special song-writing workshop.  They will all brainstorm to create a musical phrase that will be melded it into lyrics based on the children’s ideas.  The song will then be written on a board onstage, so that everyone in the concert hall can sing it together.

The concert closes with all joining together in singing “Give Us Hope,” the powerful childhood anthem composed for the YPC by Jim Papoulis, with the composer himself on the piano.
