Maria Peña, an Assistant Conductor of the Young People’s Chorus of New York City, joined YPC in 2012 as an artistic assistant. Maria is currently the principal conductor of the Intermezzo division and both the junior and senior divisions of YPC’s first community chorus in Washington Heights, the Young People’s Chorus of New York City at Washington Heights (YPCWH). Maria also conducts children in New York City public schools as part of YPC’s Satellite Schools Program. A native of Colombia, Maria came to YPC from the Jacksonville Children’s Chorus Training Choir, where she was the conductor of the ensemble. She has completed three levels of the Choral Music Experience Institute with Doreen Rao and holds a Bachelor of Music summa cum laude in voice performance from the University of North Florida, where she was assistant conductor of the UNF Chorale, the UNF Chamber Singers, and co-conductor of the Women’s Chorale.
