[New York 1] Young People’s Chorus in Tune with Pope’s Visit

By Roger Clark, Friday, September 18, 2015

Pope Francis is set to visit the National September 11th Memorial and Museum next week and while he’s there, the Young People’s Chorus of New York City will perform for him.

The chorus was founded 27 years ago by artistic director Francisco Nunez.

Since then, they’ve performed all over the world.

But Nunez says singing for the Pope is an especially big deal.

“Every single child in the Young People’s Chorus is very excited to be part of this whole thing. Because he’s representing an international idea of what world peace can be and how to bring people together and YPC has the same mission,” Nunez said.”I’m really excited because I’ve always wanted to meet the pope or like have an encounter up close with the pope,” said Thalia St. Hubert, a chorus member.

“It’s like  a big responsibility and it’s also like a big deal to tell your parents “hey look! I’m singing for the pope” and yeah it’s a lot of pressure but at the same time it’s enjoyable,” said Erika Urgiles, a chorus member.

The 100 member chorus also performed for Pope Benedict XVI during his visit in 2008.
