Founder and Artistic Director of the multiple award-winning Young People’s Chorus (YPC), Francisco J. Núñez, was recently named as the 2018 Educator of the Year by Musical America, the oldest American magazine on classical music.

The YPC was founded by Nunez in 1988, and is described by Opera News as “One of New York City’s artistic treasures.” As the universal language, music is used to unite children of different economic, racial and religious backgrounds, as they work together, weaving complex harmonies and riveting choreography into superb performances.

“Bringing our young people together, so that they’re ready for a multicultural concept of life, and sounds and rhythms, is…what Young People’s Chorus is trying to do,” says Núñez.

Celebrating a quarter century of international musical excellence in the Catskills, the Shandelee Music Festival (SMF) will begin its 25th anniversary year festivities with a P.L.A.Y. the Classics concert by the YPC.

The Chorus will perform An Afternoon of Choral Artistry, a program of choral classics featuring spirituals, songs from the Broadway stage, and many surprises, complete with show-stopping choreography.

P.L.A.Y. (Peace, Love, Art, You!) the Classics was instituted in 2016 as a partnership with Bethel Woods Center for the Arts. According to Darlene Fedun, Chief Executive Officer at Bethel Woods, the program provides “specific emphasis on reaching young adults in Sullivan County to introduce a love and appreciation of classical music to new audiences and youth.”

The performance will take place in the Event Gallery at Bethel Woods on April 22 at 3:00pm. The concert will be preceded by an introduction to the music, and will be followed by a specialty dessert reception.
