November 3, 2024 | United Palace
Screening at 5:00pm
We are excited to announce a collaborative performance with the Washington Heights Community Choir at the upcoming screening of Steven Spielberg’s sci-fi classic Close Encounters of the Third Kind, to take place at the historic United Palace on Sunday, November 3. The event is part of Movies at the Palace: Season of Friendship, a film series designed to bring people together through beloved films and live performances.
Before the film screening, the Young People’s Chorus of New York City and the Washington Heights Community Choir will perform a newly arranged vocal interpretation of the iconic “conversation” between humans and aliens from the movie’s climax. Through a rich blend of voices representing a variety of races, ages, and backgrounds, the performance will underscore the central message of the Season of Friendship series: the power of connection and the beauty of our differences. It will set the tone for the evening’s theme, echoing the films exploration of reaching out and embracing the unknown.
The film runs for 2 hours and 18 minutes, is rated PG, and will be screened on DCP. We chose the theme of friendship after reflecting on what we need most in 2024.
Please note: The Season of Friendship is a different series than Movies at the Palace with Lin-Manuel Miranda, who is not scheduled to be at this screening.
