OUR MISSION

The Young People’s Chorus of New York City’s mission is to provide children of all cultural and economic backgrounds with a unique music education program and choral performance that seeks to fulfill each child’s potential while creating a model of artistic excellence and diversity that enriches the community.

Our History

Founded by Artistic Director Francisco J. Núñez, a MacArthur Fellow, YPC is an award-winning multicultural youth chorus that serves over 2,000 New York City children (ages 8-18) annually. Growing up in New York City in the 1970s, Núñez, who is Latino/Haitian, experienced segregation and inequality firsthand. For him, music opened doors to new places, friendships, and opportunities; and he created YPC to leverage music as an equalizing force to bring children together from all backgrounds. YPC not only provides unparalleled musical training, performance opportunities, and pathways to higher education, it also creates a space where young people feel safe and supported as they develop their talents, skills, and life-long friendships.

Today, YPC is a leader in creating pathways to success through the arts–setting a standard for choral education through artistic excellence and a child-focused, inclusive approach.

Dear Friends,

Thank you for helping YPC continue to grow and thrive in our mission to bring diverse young voices together, elevate joy, and build a more inclusive, empathetic society.

With your continued support and belief in our mission, we have been able to provide children of all backgrounds access to our programs, ensuring financial circumstances are never a barrier to participation. Your contributions have fueled 2,000 young people’s growth as musicians, learners, and global citizens.

As we reflect on our past achievements and look ahead to exciting opportunities on the horizon, we are filled with gratitude for each and every one of you who has been a part of our journey.

Your commitment to the development of young talent is what drives us forward and inspires us to reach new heights.

Meet our Team

YPC instructors and staff mirror the great diversity of New York City. Our faculty of professional teaching artists hold advanced degrees in music and education, and design a diverse musical repertoire that reflects the spirit of YPC.

ARTISTIC + PROGRAMMING

ADMINISTRATIVE

At YPC, we believe every child deserves a path to music education. We provide scholarships to any child in need, ensuring financial barriers never prevent a child from exploring music and pursuing their dreams. We also go beyond tuition scholarships, covering the cost of children’s travel, snacks, custom-tailored costumes, subject tutoring, and college preparation to ensure that YPC functions as an inclusive home for children from all socioeconomic backgrounds.

our programs

This methodology is woven through YPC’s three choral programs, which reach 2,000 choristers annually and give over 120 performances a year on some of the world’s most prestigious stages—spanning five continents, from Smetana Hall in Prague to the Beijing Opera House to Lincoln Center. YPC has appeared with The Met Opera and the New York Philharmonic, and in guest spots like The Today Show and the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree Lighting, with network coverage ranging from ABC, NBC, and FOX to the BBC and PBS.

Over 450 choristers, ages 8–18, participated in YPC’s highly acclaimed capstone after-school performance program in the 2023-24 season, where they developed music literacy, vocal technique, performance skills, and choreography. Collectively, they dedicated more than 450 hours to rehearsals with YPC’s performance ensembles, bringing their artistry to life through 60 live performances throughout the year.

Each year, choristers have the opportunity to participate in masterclasses with world-renowned artists. In 2024, they performed for and received invaluable feedback from legends Joyce DiDonato and Lester Lynch during a live audience session.

YPC choristers also serve as cultural ambassadors, representing the United States in performances across the country and around the world. In Summer 2023, 100 choristers traveled to South Korea to compete in the World Choir Games, where they won five gold medals and earned the title of World Champions.

In the 2023-24 season, YPC engaged 150 young people in its two after-school Community Choruses at Goddard Riverside Community Center and in Washington Heights. Choristers received approximately 130 hours of dedicated instruction, providing consistent, high-quality musical training that supports both artistic growth and academic achievement. By bringing music directly to these neighborhoods, YPC reaches areas with many English language learners and alleviates transportation challenges for families who find it difficult to travel throughout the city.

Community Choristers performed with over 8,000 children before a crowd of 15,000 at the Prudential Center as part of American Young Voices, collaborated with YPC National, and even appeared in a national Tommy Hilfiger commercial. They also joined YPC’s renowned Performance Choruses at major public events, proudly showcasing their talent and representing their communities on some of New York City’s most prominent stages.

Looking ahead to the 2024–25 season, YPC is excited to launch its third Community Chorus in the South Bronx in partnership with the Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club—furthering its mission to bring the power of music to every corner of the city.

Through a partnership with the New York City Department of Education, YPC conductors traveled to 17 New York City public schools to bring music education to over 1,400 elementary and middle school students during the 2023-24 season. All of our school partners were Title 1 schools with limited budgets for artistic programming. YPC subsidized 65–100% of its School Choruses costs, and students did not pay to participate. Using a specially designed curriculum, YPC conductors and accompanists provided children across all classrooms with a consistent and engaging musical framework. This immersive program not only nurtured students’ musical growth but also fostered their social-emotional development.

Over the past two years, with support from the New York Community Trust, YPC has leveraged its music literacy-based curriculum to address pandemic-related literacy deficits among struggling New York City students. Since piloting our literacy-enhanced programming, we have seen a 189% increase in choristers’ Content Knowledge and an average increase of 15% in ELA scores.

Our College Bound Programs

YPC offers more than a world-class music education. Through our College Bound and career exploration initiatives, we collaborate with education specialists and corporations to provide choristers with up to 100 hours of academic enrichment, college- and career-readiness, and life-skills development. These programs are designed to empower young people to discover their personal goals, navigate the college application process, and cultivate confidence and resilience in life.
